The Craigmillar Book Festival Competition by Hazel Allan

On Friday March 20th 2009 I visited the Gaff Theatre in Craigmillar as part of the ‘Craigmillar Book Festival’. I was invited to introduce my forthcoming novel ‘Bree McCready and the Half Heart Locket’ to one hundred Primary Six and Seven children from the Craigmillar cluster (St Francis Primary, Castleview Primary, Niddrie Mill Primary and Newcraighall Primary). Bree McCready and the Half-Heart Locket was the debut novel from Hazel Allan; the sequel Bree McCready and the Flame of Irenus will be published in October 2010.

Hazel previously worked with underprivileged children as part of the Government’s Early Intervention Programme, which was established to tackle the problem of low literacy levels. She has also worked with children on the verge of exclusion from secondary school, and has a keen interest in literacy issues.

Hazel is a confident and natural storyteller and uses storytelling as a way to engage children and to stimulate interest in reading and books. She lives in Edinburgh with her young son
